Welcome to the Green Economy Institute.
The Institute is a resource center designed to assist people in understanding, accessing and growing the green economy. It provides links to key organizations and agencies around the world that are contributing to the transition to post-fossil fuel, low carbon, energy, transportation and business systems; in other words, to a Green Economy.
The Institute also provides essays and opinion pieces on the timely, often pressing economic issues of the day. The “Hot Topic” link on this website contains that information. We publish articles from a wide variety of authors and welcome submittals from the public.
The United States and the World are facing unprecedented challenges including escalating global climate change, an international recession, and increasing political instability and social hardship resulting from petro-political tensions.
The Green Economy Institute believes that the number one solution to these enormous challenges is to make a rapid transition to a green economy.
What is a Green Economy?
Unlike our current economic system, a green economy will function like a healthy ecosystem, continually renewing, evolving, and innovating. It will grow without destroying the natural or human capital upon which it depends. There will be no “waste,” as all materials will be continuously recycled into nutrients for other industries.
In the green economy our electricity will come from clean, renewable resources. Buildings will be so well-designed they actually generate more electricity than they consume. Our vehicles will be profoundly more efficient and will run on clean, renewable electricity, biofuels, fuel cells, and in the short term natural gas.
Such an economy will be green as in environment and green as in cash in our pockets. Millions of people will have family wage jobs providing the products and services for post fossil fuel, low carbon industries. The United States will be a leader in making clean energy, water reclamation, recycling, and green chemistry technologies for the world.
